Upstairs At Eric's

an image of a bird sat on a wire against a cloudy sky

a bird i saw whilst sitting on an empty bleacher during my lunch period

yesterday my psych teacher noticed my talking heads t-shirt. a huge fan of music herself, we spoke a bit about new wave. before she left me to my activity discussion group, she recommended me Yazoo's 1982 album Upstairs At Eric's, which i quickly scribbled by the header of my notes. i was excited to listen, and immediately put the album on during my lunch period.

the album is rife with era-appropriate SYNTHESIZER. i often tend to enjoy a heavy dose of synthesizer (i especially love Gary Numan's albums Replicas Redux and The Pleasure Principle) but honestly, i didn't think it effective in this case! perhaps the application was too generic for me.

the soulful singing rather fell flat on me a majority of the time, so the album didn't quite resonate as a whole.

on the bright side, one song DID make it onto my playlist! i loved In My Room. the singing was soulful, yet restrained- combined with the ambient murmuring in the backtrack... i really jive with it. its moody!

overall, not my cup of tea, but it was definitely worth a listen :-)

3.5/5 ((in my personal opinion, of course))

today my teacher recommended the music of Herbie Hancock, so that's next on my agenda!
